Deep Foundations

Load, settlement and ground response at piles, shafts and piers

Strain, settlement, pore-water pressure and displacement data from deep foundation elements and the soil and rock around them.

Overview

What TestoGauge can monitor

Deep foundations transfer load into soil and rock. Instrumentation records how foundation elements and the surrounding ground respond, so behaviour can be compared with design expectations.

  • Foundation elements: strain, displacement, tilt and cracking in piles, shafts and piers.
  • Settlement: vertical movement of foundation elements over time.
  • Surrounding ground: pressure from soil or rock, pore-water pressure, and subsurface movement.
  • Water: water movement or leakage through the surrounding soil.
  • External loads: dynamic loads and vibration from traffic and seismic activity.

Geospatial positioning and laser scanning can add position and geometry data to point sensor readings.

Instrumentation

Relevant instrumentation

  • Strain gauges: strain in piles, shafts and piers.
  • Displacement sensors and tiltmeters: shifts, misalignment and tilting of foundation elements.
  • Settlement gauges: vertical movement and subsidence.
  • Piezometers: pore-water pressure in surrounding soil or rock.
  • Pressure cells: pressure from soil or rock on foundation elements.
  • Inclinometers and extensometers: movement and deformation of surrounding ground.
  • Accelerometers and seismic sensors: dynamic loads and ground movement.
  • Crack, temperature and humidity sensors: cracking, thermal effects and moisture in foundation elements.
  • Flow meters: water movement through the surrounding soil.
  • GNSS sensors and laser scanning: position and geometry of foundation elements.
Monitoring workflow

From the sensor to engineering review

  1. 01

    Instrument

Sensors installed in or on piles, shafts and piers, and in the surrounding ground.

  2. 02

    Connect

Supported instruments can use wired, wireless or fiber-optic configurations, depending on the instrument, monitoring requirements and site conditions.

  3. 03

    Review & alert

Readings can be grouped by element and trended against design expectations, with configurable thresholds.

  4. 04

    Digital twin

Sensor data can be incorporated into digital-twin views to help teams review foundation conditions and changes over time.

FAQ

Questions about foundation monitoring

Which foundation elements can be instrumented?
Piles, shafts and piers, together with the surrounding soil or rock.
Why monitor pore-water pressure?
Changes in pore-water pressure can affect the strength of surrounding soil. Piezometers record these changes for engineering review.
Who assesses the results?
The platform presents readings and trends. Assessment of foundation performance remains with the project’s engineers.
